Correctional Officer Requirements for Ohio

To become a Corrections Officer for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, the following minimum qualifications are required: have a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license.

Additionally, you must have good communication and people skills, be flexible, productive, prompt, and have self-control.

You may not have any felony or domestic violence convictions, or any misdemeanor convictions within the last two years. Correction officers are required to carry firearms as an essential function of the position, so you must be legally able to possess a firearm.

You may only apply for correction officer positions when there are active listings for job openings. To check availability, visit the Ohio Hiring Management System (OHMS) Carrier Center website, and enter your search criteria.

After hire, you will attend a one week, 40-hour new hire orientation training at your future worksite facility before you attend pre-service academy training.

Pre-service assessment training is at the Corrections Training Academy (CTA) in Orient, Ohio. Lodging accommodation is available free of charge during your training, as well as breakfast, lunch, and dinner. CTA is a 120 hour, 3-week course where you will experience both classroom and hands-on training. Subjects include communication, security, self-defense, and firearms qualification.

You have two years from the date of hire to pass the corrections assessment at CTA. You will have a probationary period of one year after CTA completion.
